Cromwell Dean is a British musical prodigy. He does not just hear the music, but he feels and sees it. For him, it is not just the sounds, but the feelings and the experiences. Before Cromwell was the worldwide EDM music prodigy, he was once one of the youngest, most talented composers. After the loss of his father and the deterioration of his mental health, he hides behind the persona of a DJ as a way to use music to express his emotion, though he keeps his profile detached.
At one of his shows, he meets America’s sweetheart, Bonnie Farraday, who was once a fan of Cromwell’s composition. When they finally meet, Bonnie feels disappointment, as the boy she used to look up to lacks meaning, emotion, and expression in his music. When Cromwell’s mother requests him to move to the United States as an international student to study music as a classmate of Bonnie, coincidentally, Bonnie refuses to see Cromwell as the worldwide known DJ, but instead as a talented musician who has greater potential than others see in him.
Their relationship develops slowly but powerfully. Bonnie helps Cromwell confront and tackle his hidden struggles. Through her, Cromwell begins to rediscover his true, authentic self. Though Cromwell thinks things will get better, Bonnie has some news to share, and that might change the outlook of his life.
This book felt like I was watching a movie. If I were Tillie Cole, I would get right away on making a movie out of this book. It was emotional and heartbreaking, and Cole refuses to hide emotions and thoughts. She leans into themes to craft moments that feel realistic and raw. I had read A Thousand Boy Kisses by Cole last summer, and that truly left me hooked.By the end, A Wish for Us leaves a lasting impact. It’s the kind of book that stays with you, not just because of its romance, but because of the emotions it evokes. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful. If you are into books about romance, yearning, heartbreak, and resilience, this book is perfect for you.
