Today, I will be reviewing Walk Like a Girl by Prabal Gurung, a motivational and close to home memoir about self discovery, personal growth, and standing out from the crowd, despite what people have to say.

Prabal Gurung is a Nepali American fashion designer based in New York. This book walks through his life story:from being born to Nepali parents in Singapore and raised by a single mom in Kathmandu, being a victim of bullying and harassment because of his feminine leaning behaviors and lack of confidence, to a confused teenager in India,to becoming one of the most well-known names in the fashion industry. Despite being lost and confused in multiple different conflicting worlds, readers like myself have learned that our family always has our back during the good times in bad. In this story, Gurung emphasizes the love and acceptance he had received from his mother, sister and brother, who helped him gain self discovery.

Most importantly, this book emphasizes perseverance. Whether it is racial discrimination, homophobia or bad working ethics. Though people laughed at the idea of him starting his line known as “Prabal Gurung” because it wouldn’t align with brands like Donna Karan, Coco Chanel and Ralph Lauren, he proved them wrong, showing anything is possible once you have trust in yourself. Today, his designs have been worn by powerful women like Michelle Obama, Kamala Harris, Oprah Winfrey, Kate Middleton,Jennifer Lopez, Sydney Sweeney and more.

This memoir isn’t just about a fashion designer’s super cool designs, it’s about identity, family, and confidence and that your differences are a testament to building your own path whether you are an entrepreneur, model or just some random dude on the street.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is into fashion, motivation and staying strong when things hold them back. Happy Reading!
