Someone Like You: A Book Review

02/15/2025

Last week, I finished reading Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen, a coming-of-age novel about two teenage girls trying to navigate their tough lives.

Halley Martin, a sixteen-year-old girl, has always done everything with her best friend, Scarlett Thomas, by her side. But when Scarlett’s charming jock boyfriend, Michael Sherwood, tragically dies in a sudden motorcycle accident, everything changes. As both Halley and Scarlett cope with the loss, Scarlett gets the shocking news that she’s pregnant with Michael’s child. Feeling alone, Scarlett leans on Halley for support as she struggles with her grief. Meanwhile, Halley is also dealing with her own challenges—managing relationships, family issues, and her personal growth, especially as she rebels against her old image of being the shy, innocent girl she used to be. As the story unfolds, both girls step out of their comfort zones to discover who they really are and fight for what they believe in.

If you enjoy books that explore navigating life’s challenges, adolescence, grief, coming-of-age, friendship, and family, then this book is perfect for you. Happy Reading!
