The Boyfriend Wish: A Book Review

As an South Asian American, I always enjoy reading a good book with a South Asian protagonist. Last week, I had came across a book called The Boyfriend Wish by Swati Teerdhala. I am a huge fan of dramas, especially bollywood movies or cheesy rom-coms. This book didn´t fail to impress or entertain me. If you are into romance, comedy or books with teenage characters, this book is just for you.

Deepa Josyula, a seventeen-year-old South Indian American has wished to fulfill some of her skeptical dreams before she graduates high school. One of them is to find a charming boyfriend, who is perfect on paper. She knows she is not alone to complete this mission as she has her best friends from her cul-de-sac: her wingwoman, Lily, and prankster Vikram ¨Vik¨ for short. After a rough day at school, her grandmother gives her a jasmine bloom which helps grant wishes. Deepa wishes for the perfect boyfriend that she had set up goals and expectations for. The next day, a new boy moves into their cul-de-sac. Rohit D´Souza; the perfect man. Perfect on paper, and a charmer. Deepa is exhilerated because Rohit would be a great match for her. She finds his charismatic personality ideal, but something feels off. Is this what she wished for? Is it the perfect wish that she deserved? Read this book to find out.
