Amil and the After: A Book Review

A couple years ago, I read The Night Diary by my favorite author Veera Hiranandani and have read this book multiple times. In 2021, my school had hosted an online meet and greet with the author and I was excited to hear that she would have a sequel covering the other main characters point of view. Recently, I got hold of a copy of her new book.

After the India and Pakistan partition, Nisha and her twelve year old brother Amil move to India as refugees. After his shift to Bombay(now Mumbai) India, Amil misses the life in Mirpur Khas, which is now Modern-day Pakistan. In the book The Night Diary, Amil’s sister, Nisha writes her problems as letters to their deceased mother. However, the letters and words do not make sense to Amil because of his struggle with Dyslexia and ADHD. But he expresses himself and his broad feelings in  illustrations of his new life in India. But it comes with some bumps on the road, and some new lifelong friendships. If you are a middle-grade reader, and want to learn more about the journey of Amil and his family as refugees, consider reading this book.

My experience with reading sequels isn’t amazing. To be quite honest, I expected this book to be just like the others but Hiranandani´s writing never seems to disappoint me, or her other readers. So, I would suggest you get up and read this book.
